news - China Resists UN Security Council Talks on Burma, Envoys Say

october 2nd, 2009

"China kept Burma off the agenda of the United Nations Security Council this month by seeking to put the issue of civilian deaths in Afghanistan on the schedule, Chinese and French envoys said. Neither subject made it.

'It was a killing amendment,' French Ambassador Gerard Araud said of the Chinese push for discussion of civilian deaths in Afghanistan, which Britain and France opposed. 'They did it for maneuvering, for retaliation.'

China’s request for talks on civilian deaths in Afghanistan caused the US, Britain and France to compromise, leaving both issues off the agreed agenda to avoid a public dispute."
